I hesitate to spread the word about Fred's Bakery & Deli lest it become a phenomenon but I can't help myself. This is the real deal folks! The rugelach is outstanding as are all the pastries, coffee and sandwiches. I come in the mornings for the breakfast croissant sandwiches, which are always prepared with farm fresh ingredients. I have tried most of the items on the menu and every single one was made with care. Avi, the proprietor, has turned what was once a poor excuse for a bakery into a real neighborhood gem.
Hi, been there once on a Monday. Got 5 different baked goods: chocolate croissant, almond croissant, black & white cookie, kalachis and apricot croissant. Everything was very, very fresh, light and tasty. However, most were too light weight too me. Could have been 1/3 to 1/2 more the weight I feel.
Chocolate croissant was really great: perfect "molten crunch", like caramelized. My favorite of all 5.
Almond croissant dough was amazing but the "amandine" in it was WAY too little (thin & smaller than an index finger size on each end) vs. Eilat bakery's. More almonds on top would be appreciated.
B&W cookie I am not an expert but my wife said it was very good (black part was too sweet to me and B&W glaze was too thin to me).
Kalachis was my first-time and was delicious, unique and way heavier than all the other 4 (thus a better deal in my opinion).
Apricot croissant was made with non-canned fruit. Dough was great too but I regret the filling used is jam rather than custard or the like, which is more traditional.
Overall, very good quality, the job of a pro or, I would dare, a bakery artist. I feel pricing, even for Kosher, is a bit on the high for the weight of these items, at 3.29 to 3.49 a piece. In my opinion, could be 50c lower.
Looking forward to tasting more of their products though...
Wonderful food, probably the best tuna panini I've had in long Time, everything was fresh, delicious baked goods and you get a free cookie.
I'LL BE BACK !!!
Best bakery on the west coast. I have to stop here every time I'm in LA and don't leave with a spending a good amount of cash. The pastries are fresh, unique and out of this world good. The sandwiches are tasty and make a great on the go lunch. There is nothing in the cases that will disappoint.
Amazing chocolate babka! I learned about this place when a friend brought some babka to my home a couple months ago. I've been to Fred's 6 times since to enjoy the babka, and even branched out to the kalachis, rugelach, and chocolate cigars. Delicious!
I've been visiting Fred's for over 30 years! My grandmother used to take me there all the time and now I take my daughter. She loves the sprinkle cookies, my mom loves the rye bread and I can't get enough of the chocolate danish, chocolate log cake and chocolate rugulas! The owners are kind and caring. It really is as good as it gets.
The folks at Fred's are always super friendly. That's great and all, but HAVE YOU TRIED THEIR RUGELACH?!?! These are hands-down the greatest rugelach around. They have the perfect ratio of choclate to dough and are oh-so-tender to bite into.
The owner is such a nice person the place is every clean I live around the block and just great way to get coffee if I am on the run I will come back again
Great baked goods and really nice people. We love picking up sweets from here for the kids.
I was craving the sweets again. I swung by this place on my way home and stumbled upon a bakery filled with pastries. I met the man behind the counter by the name of Avi, a really nice guy.
I tried a raspberry bear claw type of pastry along with another pastry that they made up themselves. I'm not sure the name of it but it starts with an A and it is super heavy. It's like a large, dense rugelach made with sour cream inside. Both pastries were good but very expensive! I believe together they came to just short $7. I thought that was a bit much compared to other bakeries.
I'm not sure if I would go back to this place but if you're in the area you could check it out and decide on whether you like it or not :)
